"Orc Tusks"
Packaging and Photography: Keto
Tusks created by: Drillbot (@drillbot14kv3)
For: dBear and Tusker
So it was recently dBear's birthday, and I decided to try and give him multiple “smaller gifts”. And by the time I sunk my teeth (get it?) into the whole project, I thought it would be great to also get a matching pair for Tusker, fancy packaging and all, so they’ll match.
I saw that drillbot was making and selling these prosthetic orc tusks, and as soon as I saw them, I instantly knew I had to get them for dbear and Tusler, since they’re both into orcs and tusks and that kinda thing. I knew having these big orc tusks and walking around like a big ol’ lunk would be right up their alley. And to be honest, it looks great on em both: cute and hot all at the same time.
Drillbot was kind enough to customize the paint job. I like his normally fully-painted ones, but I just thought a lighter more subtle paint job would be more fitting.
When they arrived, they looked PERFECT, and arrived in simple and safe packaging.
But that wasn’t enough for my inner gay, designer/decorative, Martha Stewart self, so I got some textured paper for wrapping, some hemp rope, redesigned the instructions and sketched scientific diagrams of the teeth. Then printed it on paper with a worn paper texture background, then crumpled the paper until soft and tore and burnt the edges with a lighter. Then I scrapped off the char to make sure the char didn’t ruin anything else.
Then I rolled it up and used the hemp rope to tie it up with a little metal pin that says “altered” on it that I found (Tusker’s metal pin says “Imagine”), which felt like a perfect little touch, almost as if it’s a warning or description of the secrets concealed!
Then I got a black satin-ish pouch with a blue lining (their favorite color) to hold the tusks, and a nice little treasure box to conceal it all.
The concept was to make it all feel like a little hidden treasure, found in ancient orc ruins, that someone left behind to preserve something rare, precious, and a secret — magic tusks that turn you into one of them.

This scene still breaks my heart each and every single time I watch it.
Azula was a terrible, horrible person. She would have set the world aflame and laughed over the broken carcass of her brother.
But she was fourteen.
She was so ruined and twisted by her childhood and by her nation, driven to insanity by the expectations placed upon her.
Azula was bad and yet I can’t help but feel so terribly sorry for her.

"I don’t have sob stories like all of you."

SHE WAS FUCKING FOURTEEN WHAT

"My own mother….thought I was a monster. She was right, of course, but it still hurt.”

actually, i think one of the shows strengths is that they didn’t shy away from what a horrible tragedy this was. even though she was clearly a villain and did unspeakably awful things, this scene was still framed as sad. there was no celebrating- they just look at her sadly.
the music for the battle that leads up to this moment is sad too- it’s an epic battle, visually probably one of the biggest things done in the entire series, and they could have played it with thumping, energetic, dangerous music. but instead it’s quiet and somber. because the whole scenario is heartbreaking, and they know it.
i think the fact that a kid’s show had so much respect for it’s viewers and their ability to understand the complexity of this situation is what makes avatar great.
